About The Author
Sinéad Murphy is an Irish author, television Director, and filmmaker. ‘A Tiger named Lee’ is Sinéad’s debut picture book, published in 2021 by Tiny Tree Children’s Books. Sinéad wrote ‘A Tiger Named Lee,’ for her young daughter to show her that it’s normal to have fears and worries and that help is always there if you ask for it.
This beautiful, colourful children’s book tells the story of a small tiger named Lee and how he overcomes his fears. My four boys love reading and we couldn’t wait to dive into the jungle. We followed Lee, a tiger who lives up in a tree with his mum. He’s not bold or brave like his three older brothers and is scared of what hidden dangers lurk below. His mother calls to him to come down from the tree, but he refuses. However things change one stormy and thunderous night when tragedy strikes his home and Lee is faced with his biggest fears.
I loved how Murphy included lots of different animals such as boa constrictors and yellow tailed lizards. We learned how there were lots of different animals living in the jungle. Our favourite would have to be the friendly orange snake, his little grin and eagerness to help was a joy to read.
The rhyming was fun to read and fitted in perfectly with the story. It flowed and rolled off the tongue. My boys love rhyming books as they try to guess the next rhyming word. It also helped them remember the story more clearly.
The message of this story is extremely helpful for younger children who are learning to overcome their fears. When Lee and his mum are thrown out of the tree and onto the ground, Lee comes face to face with his fears. Most of the creatures in the jungle are friendly and kind, they offer help. Lee suddenly sees that he has nothing to be afraid of. He steps out alone into the jungle and ends up on his very first playdate. We were so happy for Lee and I was reminded how proud I am when my boys overcome their fears.
I give A Tiger Named Lee By Sinéad Murphy a Five out of Five paw rating.
Filled with gorgeous illustrations and a message that everyone can relate to, this children’s book is perfect to read at bedtime with your little cubs.
As soon as we finished the story, the boys wanted to be brave like Lee and overcome their fears. First I had to face paint them into tigers and many hours were spent practicing their roars. After a while they all tackled something that had been worrying them lately and overcame it with big success. I am a very proud mummy tigress.
