Big Kicks! 23 Weeks Pregnant

There’s no stranger feeling than feeling your unborn child kick and backflip inside you. It’s such an odd, yet lovely sensation that is difficult to describe. It’s like bubbles? Hmmm let me see if I can do better than that. That was a bit lame. I know, I’ve got it. Right. You know when you’re swimming in the pool and you happen across a water jet and you can’t help but put your hand over it. There’s a weird current that plays with your hand and makes it feel all funny but you keep doing it because it’s amusing. It feels like that but in your belly. It’s sort of pleasant but a little uncomfortable at first and then it just becomes a normal thing for the rest of your pregnancy. Yes… completely normal when you see ripples of movement and you start thinking you might actually have a chest burster in there waiting to attack. Completely normal…

I am happy to report that for the past few weeks Mogwai has started kicking and boy does he like to kick. Not as hard as his big brother, I will give him that, but he’s definitely a wriggler. Like Cabbit he has his own little routine of when he decides to kick me for example if I drink anything fizzy or when I’m eating dinner. It’s good because I can keep an eye on his movements. It also terrifies me.

Cabbit was a morning kicker especially if I was having a bath, but a few days before my due date he wasn’t as active. Husband rushed me to hospital where they monitored me for a couple of hours and then decided to induce me as his heartbeat had too many dips over the several hours they monitored us. And the rest is history, he was born through emergency c-section and is happy and healthy today. I like to think that it is partly because I kept an eye on his kicking movements that he is here today. I really don’t even want to think about what would have happened if I had left it. No, not going there! nuh-uh!

I remember my midwife telling me that once baby starts kicking to always keep an eye on them. I am so glad I did and will continue to do so with Mogwai. I have my bunny paws crossed that he will hopefully just decide near his due date “Right, I have had enough of this cramped space. Time to leave and annoy my parents” That will be a beautiful and painful day. But no matter how he is born as long as he’s healthy and happy, I’m a very happy mummy bunny; it’s just a scary heart stopping feeling if I haven’t felt him kick in a while. He does like to scare the bunny tail off me.

I do treasure these moments that I have with our unborn son. He’s in the safest place he will ever be. I keep gently rubbing my belly and talking to him while he kicks away. His father will kiss and hug my belly trying to provoke a kick to his head. Even after all this time, it still amazes me that I have a second baby inside me growing everyday. How can the body so such things! It baffles me!

Oh god that just reminds me of how big I have already gotten! I look like a whale! A cute Bunny according to my husband. It’s so true what they say about your second pregnancy – that you show earlier. I feel like I’m in that annoying stage where people are wondering if I am pregnant or just fat. Doesn’t bother me too much, I have gotten better to be comfortable in my body but it does make me teary when I can’t fit in my favourite clothes. My beautiful black brocade dress for example! WAHHHHH!

Right, enough self-pity! Time to make dinner and relax for the evening. We have been making our way through the James Bond Movies, tonight it’s “The Spy Who Loved Me”. Our son is very much enjoying them, think he sees himself as a bit of a ladies man. Well, whenever we are in public he does make a point of saying hello and smiling at any woman who crosses his path. He can’t help himself. Little charmer.
