If Procrastination was an animal it would be a pig

Procrastination. Its something we all do, whether we are conscious of it or not it seeps into our mind, making us take our sweet time in doing a task at hand. We, as human beings love nothing more than leaving things to the last-minute. When it comes down to it, are we all just putting off living life?

Why does it take us a long time to do something that we said we were going to do? For example cleaning: Say the bathroom is in desperate need of a Cillit Bang spritz, we say in our minds that we will clean it…tomorrow. Tomorrow comes and we still say we are going to do it but find watching cat videos on the internet much more entertaining. When we finally pull ourselves away we realise that we have to get the dinner on, do the washing up and then sit down with a cuppa to watch Eastenders. Before we know it a whole week has passed and the bathroom has invited some friends over without our knowing, limescale and ground in dirt.

The longer we put something off the harder it becomes later. We reach a point where we can’t stand it anymore and are forced to do what it was we should have done in the first place. It’s like we have trained our brain into thinking that if we leave whatever it is well alone, somehow magically it will get done for us. It’s hard to understand why we put ourselves through the stress and annoyance of leaving a task for so long. We go out of our way (sometimes without realising it) to do other things. Maybe we like working to a time limit and leaving it till the last second makes us feel as if we have to race to finish it so we feel like a winner after completion. Some people work better when put under pressure so maybe that has something to do with it? Whatever it is, we humans will always find a way to procrastinate when the mood strikes us. I’m sure there are plenty of ways to avoid it from happening but I think it’s a mental thing. If there’s a tiny sign of doubt then we will find any excuse to avoid doing it for as long as possible. We are only human after all and can’t help but have a cheeky look on Facebook or watch a goat singing Taylor Swift’s Trouble. Isn’t that what’s life is all about after all?
